Former Chairman - Shaykh Dr Zaki Badawi (1922 - 2006) رحمه الله

Dr. Zaki Badawi was a distinguished scholar and a pivotal figure in the development of Islamic thought in the United Kingdom. As a founding member and the former Chairman of the Muslim Law (Shariah) Council, he played a crucial role in shaping the understanding and application of Shariah law within the British Muslim community. His leadership and guidance helped bridge the gap between traditional Islamic jurisprudence and the contemporary legal framework in the UK.

Born in Egypt in 1922, Dr. Badawi was educated at Al-Azhar University, one of the most prestigious Islamic institutions, where he earned a degree in theology. He later pursued further studies in the UK, obtaining a doctorate in Modernist Islamic Thought from the University of London. His extensive academic background provided him with a unique perspective on the challenges faced by Muslims living in a non-Muslim majority society.

Throughout his career, Dr. Badawi was a passionate advocate for interfaith dialogue and was instrumental in promoting mutual understanding between different religious communities. His work with the Muslim Law (Shariah) Council was marked by a commitment to ensuring that Islamic law could be practiced in harmony with British legal standards, particularly in areas such as marriage, divorce, and inheritance.

Dr. Badawi’s contributions extended beyond the Council. He was a founding member of the Muslim College in London and served as its principal, where he dedicated himself to educating a new generation of Muslim leaders who could navigate the complexities of modern life while remaining faithful to their religious principles.

A respected voice in the Muslim world, Dr. Zaki Badawi’s legacy is one of wisdom, moderation, and a profound commitment to the values of justice and compassion within the framework of Islamic law. His work continues to inspire those who seek to balance tradition with the demands of contemporary society.
